Hybrid dual-fuel heat pumps in Toronto pair a cold-climate heat pump with a gas furnace. The dual-fuel thermostat runs the heat pump most of the winter and switches to gas at the economic balance point, often near -18C. For homes that already have a gas line and a decent furnace, it’s the Ontario sweet spot. Our TSSA gas technician handles the furnace side in-house. $12,000-$20,000 installed. Rebate eligibility differs from full-electric, and we show you both.

How does a dual-fuel system work?

Two heat sources, one thermostat.

  1. Mild and cold days. The heat pump heats the house at 2.5-3.5 COP. Most of the winter in Toronto.
  2. Deep cold. Below the switchover, usually around -18C, the thermostat locks out the heat pump and fires the furnace.
  3. Summer. The heat pump is your central AC.

The heat pump sits outside. A cased evaporator coil sits on top of the furnace. A dual-fuel thermostat decides which one runs based on outdoor temperature.

Where should the switchover be?

Two numbers, and we use whichever comes first.

TermMeaning
Thermal balance pointOutdoor temp where the heat pump can no longer match the house’s heat loss
Economic balance pointOutdoor temp where gas becomes cheaper per unit of heat than electricity

The economic one depends on your Enbridge rate and your Toronto Hydro plan. On TOU the answer is different from ULO, where overnight power is very cheap. With a cold-climate unit sized by Manual J, the thermal balance point is usually well below -20C, so the economic number drives it. Most Toronto homes land around -15C to -20C.

Best whenFurnace is newer, panel is tightFurnace is old, going all-electric

We put both on one page. If your furnace is 18+ years old, a furnace to heat pump conversion usually wins. If it’s under 10 and the panel is maxed, hybrid often does.

Why does gas expertise matter?

Because half the system burns gas. Adding a cased coil changes airflow across the furnace heat exchanger. Venting, gas pressure and combustion need checking to CSA B149.1. Our TSSA G2 technician does that on the same visit as the heat pump install, so nobody blames the other trade later.

What equipment do we use?

Usually the Daikin Fit DX17VSS on top of the existing furnace. Slim side discharge fits narrow Toronto side yards, and the inverter compressor carries the house deep into winter. Carrier and Mitsubishi central options work too. All listed cold-climate heat pumps, because a hybrid that switches to gas at -5C isn’t saving you much.

Leaside example

Detached home, newer gas furnace, dead AC. We added a Daikin Fit 3-ton on the furnace with a cased coil and dual-fuel thermostat switching to gas below -18C. Enbridge plus HRSP rebates covered 55% of the install. $14,200 installed. The owner’s take: “we barely notice any difference in bills.” More on the brand on our Daikin page.

Hybrids are common in downtown Toronto detached homes and across Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill. Book the load calc and get both paths priced.

The Problem

What goes wrong with dual-fuel hybrid in Toronto

1. Worried about cold snaps Owners want heat pump savings but need a backup that kicks in on the coldest days.
2. Not using the gas line A furnace in good shape can stay as backup instead of being thrown away.
3. Controls set wrong A dual-fuel thermostat that switches at the wrong balance point wastes money in both directions.
Ontario Rebate Stack

How much can rebates take off the invoice?

Two programs stack on eligible homes. We book the audits, fill both applications and submit them on your behalf. 40-60% of install cost is commonly offset.

Program 1

Enbridge HER+

up to $7,100

Cold-climate heat pump replacing gas heat. Pre-retrofit audit first.

Program 2

Home Renovation Savings Program

$5,000-$10,000

By efficiency tier and household income. Listed equipment only.

Combined

Stacked total

up to $14,100

Pre-retrofit audit $400-$600, refunded upon install. Post-audit after commissioning.

  1. 1. Pre-audit booked before install day. Skip it and the file is usually dead.
  2. 2. Install a NEEP / NRCan listed cold-climate model, sized by Manual J.
  3. 3. Post-audit + file. We submit HER+ and HRSP for you and track the cheque.

Rebates are "up to" amounts, depend on program terms, audits, equipment listing and household eligibility, and are never guaranteed. Full rebate breakdown.

Why Us

What sets our dual-fuel hybrid work apart

01

Gas and refrigerant, one crew

TSSA G2 gas tech and Red Seal HVAC in-house. Both halves of the system done right.

02

Balance point set to your rates

Switchover tuned to your actual Enbridge and Toronto Hydro numbers, not a factory default.

03

Honest comparison

Full-electric vs hybrid in writing. Sometimes hybrid wins, sometimes it doesn't.

04

Furnace as insurance

Gas backup for the deepest cold and for power-sensitive owners.

05

Cold-climate heat pump

Daikin Fit DX17VSS or another listed unit, so the heat pump carries most of the winter.

How It Works

How dual-fuel hybrid works, step by step

Standard turnaround is 5 business days from accepted quote to a running system, winter included.

  1. 01

    Furnace assessment

Age, stages, AFUE and venting. A newer two-stage furnace is a great dual-fuel partner.

  2. 02

    Balance point math

Your Enbridge rate vs Toronto Hydro TOU or ULO rate sets the economic switchover temperature.

  3. 03

    Hybrid vs full-electric quote

Both on one page with installed price, running cost and rebate for each.

  4. 04

    Install

Heat pump outdoor unit, cased coil on the furnace, dual-fuel thermostat, gas side checked to CSA B149.1.

  5. 05

    Set the switchover

Thermostat lockouts set to your balance point and reviewed after the first cold snap.

Direct Answers

Hybrid Dual-Fuel Heat Pump Toronto FAQ

How much does a hybrid heat pump cost in Toronto?

$12,000-$20,000 installed before rebates, including the heat pump outdoor unit, cased coil, dual-fuel thermostat and gas-side checks. Using your existing furnace keeps the cost down.

When does a dual-fuel heat pump switch to gas?

At the balance point you set, often around -18C in Toronto. The thermostat runs the heat pump first and hands off to the furnace when gas becomes cheaper per unit of heat on your rates.

What's the difference between economic and thermal balance point?

Thermal balance point is where the heat pump can no longer keep up with the house's heat loss. Economic balance point is where gas becomes cheaper than electric heat. We set the switchover at whichever comes first.

Does a hybrid qualify for rebates?

Rebate eligibility differs from full-electric. Full-electric cold-climate systems replacing gas usually qualify for the larger fuel-switch amount. We show the rebate on both options.

Can I use my existing furnace?

Usually, if it's in good shape. Newer two-stage or modulating furnaces pair best. If it's 18-25 years old, full-electric often makes more sense.

Is hybrid better than full-electric in Toronto?

Depends on your furnace age, panel capacity and rates. Hybrid wins when the furnace is newer and gas is cheap. Full-electric wins when the furnace is old and rebates are bigger. We price both.

What does ULO pricing change?

Toronto Hydro's Ultra-Low Overnight rate makes overnight electric heat cheap, which can push the economic balance point colder. We factor your rate plan into the switchover.

Who services the furnace side?

We do. Our TSSA gas technician handles the furnace, venting and gas pressure, and our HVAC techs handle the heat pump.
