Mississauga Heat Pump Problems in 1970s-90s Homes
Original builder furnace and AC failing in the same year
What you noticeThe AC struggled through last summer, the furnace is throwing codes, and both carry the same install date on the label.
Why it happens hereErin Mills was built out as a planned new town from the early 1970s, with Meadowvale and Streetsville growing alongside, so whole streets got their equipment within a few years. Those systems are now reaching the end together.
How we fix itOne central cold-climate heat pump on the existing ducts replaces the AC and carries most of the heating. We price it against Alectra rates, with dual-fuel as the option that keeps the furnace.
Central, Ductless and Condo Heat Pump Services
Mississauga heat pump work is mostly ducted. Erin Mills, Meadowvale and Streetsville detached homes from the 1970s to 90s are on their first or second furnace and AC, Port Credit and Lorne Park side-splits often go ductless, and City Centre towers near Square One are PTAC territory.

What GTA homeowners say
Real installs across Toronto neighbourhoods. Rebate captures and winter performance in the owners' own words.
"Converted our Rosedale home from oil to Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat in October. Two winters, zero backup heat needed. Enbridge HER+ Oil-to-HP bonus came through at $7,100 and HRSP added $4,800. Combined covered 65% of the project."
"Our board approved on first submission. Six residents replaced PTACs the first month and the board scheduled a bulk upgrade after that."
"Enbridge + HRSP rebates covered 55% of install cost. Dual-fuel thermostat switches to gas below -18C, we barely notice any difference in bills."
Reviews shown are from customer projects. Individual results and rebate amounts depend on program terms and household eligibility.
Heat Pump Work from Port Credit to Meadowvale
Heat pumps in Mississauga are mostly a ducted job. Erin Mills, Meadowvale and Streetsville detached homes from the 1970s to 90s are still on their first or second furnace and AC, often both near the end. One central cold-climate heat pump replaces the AC and carries most of the heating.
Alectra Utilities rates, not Toronto Hydro, so the dual-fuel balance point math changes. Port Credit and Lorne Park side-splits near the lake often go ductless. City Centre towers near Square One are PTAC territory with a condo board package.
Erin Mills went up as a planned new town from the early 1970s, so entire streets share the same equipment age. Old Port Credit Village is a Heritage Conservation District, so outdoor unit placement there is planned with the designation in mind.
Housing stock we see most: 1970s-90s suburban detached with original furnaces and AC; lakeside side-splits in Port Credit and Lorne Park; City Centre condo towers.
Suburban detached, lakeside side-splits and City Centre towers
1970s-90s suburban detached. Erin Mills, Meadowvale and Streetsville homes still on the original builder furnace and AC, or their first replacement, and often both are near the end at the same time. One central cold-climate heat pump on the existing ducts replaces the AC and carries most or all of the heating. Static pressure gets tested first.
Port Credit and Lorne Park side-splits. Lakeside homes, some with baseboard and window ACs, some with hydronic heat. The Port Credit job near the lighthouse put a Fujitsu AOU-U36 with four heads on a raised, sheltered stand. $11,900, one install day.
City Centre condos. Towers near Square One run PTAC and VTAC units. Board package prepared and submitted.
Working from Port Credit to Meadowvale
Crews travel the QEW for Port Credit, Clarkson and Lorne Park, the 403 for City Centre and Erin Mills, and the 401 for Meadowvale and Streetsville. Same crews, same 5 business days quote-to-running as our Toronto jobs.
Suburban driveways and wide side yards make most installs here straightforward. Lakeside Port Credit lots are narrower and windier. City Centre towers around Square One and Celebration Square need elevator bookings and board approval.
Response times: same-day no-heat dispatch, phone answered 24/7.
Peel winters and Alectra rates
The city is on Alectra Utilities, not Toronto Hydro, so the hydro rate side of the dual-fuel balance point is different. We run the numbers on your actual Alectra and Enbridge rates. Lakeside Port Credit and Clarkson get more wind and freeze-thaw, so placement and drain paths matter there. Meadowvale and Streetsville sit a little colder on still winter nights.
How much can rebates take off the invoice?
Two programs stack on eligible homes. We book the audits, fill both applications and submit them on your behalf. 40-60% of install cost is commonly offset.
Enbridge HER+
up to $7,100
Cold-climate heat pump replacing gas heat. Pre-retrofit audit first.
Home Renovation Savings Program
$5,000-$10,000
By efficiency tier and household income. Listed equipment only.
Stacked total
up to $14,100
Pre-retrofit audit $400-$600, refunded upon install. Post-audit after commissioning.
- 1. Pre-audit booked before install day. Skip it and the file is usually dead.
- 2. Install a NEEP / NRCan listed cold-climate model, sized by Manual J.
- 3. Post-audit + file. We submit HER+ and HRSP for you and track the cheque.
Rebates are "up to" amounts, depend on program terms, audits, equipment listing and household eligibility, and are never guaranteed. Full rebate breakdown.

Mississauga Heat Pump Questions
Does Alectra change anything compared with Toronto Hydro?
It changes the electricity rate side of the running-cost and dual-fuel balance point math. Alectra serves Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan. The rebates stay the same.
What does a central heat pump cost in an Erin Mills house?
Central ducted 3-ton $10,000-$16,000, cold-climate 4-ton $14,000-$22,000, installed before rebates. Many Erin Mills homes date from the 1970s build-out, so we check the ducts first.
My Port Credit house is close to the lake. Any special considerations?
Wind and drift. We raise and shelter the outdoor unit and turn the intake off the wind so it defrosts less often. Inside the Old Port Credit Village heritage district, we also plan placement around the designation.
Can you replace the PTAC in my Square One area condo?
Yes. We review the Status Certificate, prepare the board package and submit it. Approval usually takes 2-4 weeks.
My furnace and AC are both original. Should I replace both?
A central heat pump can replace the AC and either replace the furnace or pair with it as dual-fuel. That is usually cheaper than a new furnace plus a new AC once rebates land.
Do you work in Mississauga on the same 5-day turnaround?
Yes. Same crews, same 5 business days from accepted quote to running system, from Clarkson to Meadowvale.
