Cold-climate heat pumps in Toronto are built for the bad February week, the one that sits at -20C to -30C for days. That is where ordinary heat pumps fall apart. Big-box mild-climate units lose 40-60% of their capacity below -15C and fall back on 10-20 kW of electric strip heat at 1:1. Hydro bill triples. Rooms stay cold. We install Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat MSZ-FH, Daikin Fit DX17VSS and Fujitsu AOU-U36 exclusively, and size them with a written Manual J so you need zero backup heat.
What is different about a cold-climate heat pump?
Three things, and the box sticker does not tell you any of them.
- Inverter compressor with extended low-ambient range. It speeds up as the air gets colder instead of shutting off at -12C. Some models add enhanced vapour injection to keep output up.
- Published capacity at -15C. The models we install hold 100% of rated heating capacity at -15C and keep running to -30C. Check the extended tables, not the +8C brochure number.
- Winter hardware. Base pan heater, defrost logic built for humid cold, and refrigerant circuits that run on R32 or R454B on newer lines.
NEEP’s cold-climate air-source heat pump list (ccASHP) and NRCan listings are the quickest filter. EnergyStar Most Efficient models usually sit at the top. If a unit is not on those lists, we do not quote it for whole-home heat.
Which cold-climate models do we install?
| Model | Where it shines | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat MSZ-FH | Ductless, multi-zone, Hyper-Heat central | Strong low-ambient output, very quiet heads |
| Daikin Fit DX17VSS | Central ducted on narrow lots | Side discharge, full-electric or dual-fuel |
| Fujitsu AOU-U36 | Multi-head ductless | Our go-to for 3-5 head whole-home systems |
Brand matters less than people think. Model selection and sizing decide whether it works. More on each line on our Mitsubishi and Daikin pages.
How do we size for -25C, not the average day?
Manual J calculates heat loss at Toronto’s design temperature. Then we check what the outdoor unit actually delivers at -15C and -25C from the manufacturer’s extended capacity data. If the house needs 34,000 BTU/h at design and the unit makes 36,000 at -15C, we’re in good shape. If it makes 24,000, the strips run all January.
Oversizing is the other trap. A 5-ton on a 3-ton house short-cycles in shoulder season and never dries the air in summer. The Forest Hill case study on this page needed 4 tons and two added upstairs returns. It held setpoint through a -24C week with no backup.
Why do standard heat pumps fail here?
- Compressor cutout. Scroll compressors on mild-climate units stop at -12C to -15C ambient.
- Defrost overload. Toronto’s humid winter triggers defrost every 30-45 minutes, versus 2-4 times a day in dry or mild climates. Poor placement turns that into an ice block.
- Refrigerant pressure drop. R410A loses pressure below -15C. R32 and R454B hold to about -25C.
Fix all three and the heat pump does the whole job. That is the entire point of the cold-climate category.
Where should the outdoor unit go?
Above the snow. We use raised stands or wall brackets so drift never reaches the coil, with the base pan heater wired and a clear path for defrost water to drain away instead of refreezing under the unit. Keep it out from under roof drip lines, and turn the intake away from the prevailing wind, which matters a lot in lakeside Etobicoke and near the Scarborough Bluffs. On tight lots we check clearances and Toronto’s noise bylaw before choosing the spot.
Cold-climate full-electric or dual-fuel?
Both work in Toronto. Full-electric retires the furnace, can qualify for the larger Enbridge HER+ fuel-switch rebate of up to $7,100, and drops the gas bill to zero if you go all the way. A dual-fuel hybrid keeps your furnace and switches to gas at the economic balance point, often near -18C. We price both paths side by side. For the full rebate breakdown see Ontario heat pump rebate 2026.
What does it cost?
A cold-climate 4-ton central system is $14,000-$22,000 installed before rebates. Ductless multi-zone runs $8,000-$15,000. The written quote lists every part. Our full heat pump installation page covers formats and install day in detail. Cold-climate work runs all over the city, from downtown to North York and out to Brampton and Vaughan.
