Heat pump replacement in Toronto for units that are out of parts, out of efficiency or out of refrigerant. Like-for-like swaps, or an upgrade to a cold-climate Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Fit DX17VSS or Fujitsu AOU-U36. We recheck the sizing with a Manual J first, because a lot of older units were oversized from the start. Winter failure? Emergency replacement within 48 hours.
When is it time to replace a heat pump?
Not every failure means replacement. These are the signs it probably does.
- Age. 12-15+ years on an older builder-grade unit, especially on R410A
- Big repair on an old system. Compressor or coil failure on a unit past its prime
- Refrigerant leaks that keep coming back. Corroded coils do not get cheaper to chase
- Never kept up in winter. Strip heat running all January, rooms still cold
- Rising hydro bills with no change in how you use the house
If you are on the fence, a repair diagnostic gives you both prices in writing.
Why resize before replacing?
The old unit is not a reliable guide. Plenty of 2000s-era installs in North York and Richmond Hill were sized off square footage, then the homeowner added insulation or new windows. A fresh Manual J at Toronto design temperature often comes in smaller. The Willowdale case on this page dropped half a ton. Smaller unit, longer quieter run cycles, better humidity control in July, lower bill the next month.
What are the replacement options?
| Option | When it fits | Installed (before rebates) |
|---|---|---|
| Central ducted 3-ton | Existing ducts, mid-size home | $10,000-$16,000 |
| Cold-climate 4-ton | Larger home, full-electric | $14,000-$22,000 |
| Dual-fuel hybrid | Keep the gas furnace as backup | $12,000-$20,000 |
| Ductless multi-zone | Old ductless system or no ducts | $8,000-$15,000 |
For whole-home heat we only quote cold-climate heat pumps that hold 100% capacity at -15C.
Like-for-like or upgrade?
Like-for-like makes sense if the old unit was sized right and worked well. Otherwise upgrade. A cold-climate model on R32 or R454B, an AHRI-matched coil, HSPF2 and SEER2 numbers well above what you had. The efficiency jump alone pays back a chunk of the difference, and a cold-climate unit can qualify for Enbridge HER+ and HRSP when the pre-audit is done in time.
How does a 48-hour emergency replacement work?
Day 1: diagnose, confirm it is not repairable, run a quick Manual J, quote. Source the unit. Temporary heat in if the house is dropping fast. Day 2: remove the old unit, recover the refrigerant, set the new pad or bracket, install, vacuum, commission. You have heat by the second evening in most cases.
The catch is rebates. The pre-audit must happen before install. On a 48-hour timeline we tell you upfront whether it fits, or whether a short repair to bridge a week protects a rebate worth thousands.
What happens to the old unit?
Refrigerant is recovered into certified cylinders on a scale, not vented. The old outdoor unit and coil are disconnected safely and hauled away. If the line set is the right size, clean and compatible, we pressure test and reuse it. Otherwise we run new copper.
Our Toronto heat pump replacements run all over North York and Richmond Hill, and across the rest of the GTA. Leak history on your current unit? Read about refrigerant leak repair before you decide. Or book the load calc and get both options priced.
