Heat pump repair in Toronto for defrost faults, refrigerant leaks, compressor and inverter board failures, frozen condensate drains and thermostat problems. Diagnostic is $150-$250. Our trucks carry the parts that fail most on Daikin, Mitsubishi and Fujitsu systems, so most repairs finish on the first visit. Red Seal HVAC techs, ESA electrical, TSSA gas, refrigerant certified for R410A, R32 and R454B. No heat right now? Call the 24/7 emergency line.
What heat pump problems do we fix most?
Toronto winters are hard on outdoor units. These are the calls we take every week.
- Iced outdoor coil. Failed defrost control board, bad coil sensor or a drain path that freezes. Swapped from stock, tested through two defrost cycles.
- Blowing cold in heat mode. Stuck reversing valve, low charge, or the unit locked out on a fault code.
- Not turning on. Failed contactor, capacitor, blown fuse or a tripped breaker from a shorted component.
- Short-cycling. Oversized unit, dirty coil, low refrigerant or a misplaced thermostat sensor.
- Water leaking indoors. Clogged or frozen condensate drain, failed condensate pump on a wall head.
- Inverter board faults. Error codes on Mitsubishi, Daikin and Fujitsu inverters. Board vs compressor tested first.
How does our diagnostic work?
A real diagnostic, not a filter swap and a guess. We pull the fault codes, check the electrical side (capacitors, contactor, boards, fuses, breaker), measure refrigerant pressures and calculate superheat and subcooling, verify airflow, then force a defrost cycle to watch it run. That tells us whether the problem is controls, charge, airflow or the compressor itself.
Then you get a written repair quote before any work starts.
What does heat pump repair cost?
| Repair | Typical Toronto price |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic | $150-$250 |
| Refrigerant leak repair | $300-$1,200 |
| Thermostat replacement | $350-$650 |
| Defrost control board | $400-$800 |
| Compressor repair or replacement | $800-$2,500 |
Price depends on part, brand and access. A wall-bracket unit two storeys up costs more labour than one on a pad. Manufacturer parts coverage can take the part cost off when the unit is registered and in term. We check the serial and file the claim. Full list on our pricing page.
Repair or replace?
We’ll tell you straight. Repair makes sense on a younger unit with a single failed part. Replacement starts to make sense when three things line up:
- The unit is 12-15+ years old on R410A, which is being phased down
- The repair is a third or more of the cost of a new system
- It was undersized or oversized to begin with, so it never ran right
In that case we price both and put them in writing. A new cold-climate unit can also qualify for rebates when the pre-audit is done first. See heat pump replacement for that path.
Which brands do we repair?
All the common ones. Daikin, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, LG, Carrier, Gree, plus most builder-grade units. We stock defrost boards, coil sensors, capacitors, contactors and fan motors for the lines that fail most in Toronto. Named-part problems have their own pages: compressor repair and refrigerant leak repair.
How do I avoid the next repair?
Annual service. Most failures we see started as a dirty coil, a slow drain or a weak capacitor that a tune-up would have caught. Our heat pump maintenance visit covers coil cleaning, drains, charge check and a defrost test before winter.
