Oil to heat pump conversions in Ontario, for homes paying $200-$400 a month in heating oil. The Oil-to-HP bonus pays up to $7,100, and the Home Renovation Savings Program can add $5,000-$10,000. Conversions run $18,000-$28,000 before rebates. We remove the oil tank and burner, install a cold-climate heat pump sized by Manual J, and file the rebate paperwork. Older Toronto homes in Rosedale and Old Oakville, and rural GTA homes alike.
Why get off oil now?
- Cost. Oil is one of the most expensive ways to heat a home. $200-$400 a month is common.
- Rebates. Up to $7,100 from the Oil-to-HP bonus plus HRSP on eligible homes.
- Insurance. Aging oil tanks are a concern for many insurers. Removal with documentation settles that.
- Space and smell. The tank and burner go, the basement gets a corner back.
- Cooling. You gain central AC or ductless cooling for the first time in many older homes.
What does a conversion include?
- Eligibility check and pre-retrofit audit, booked before anything is removed
- Manual J load calculation and system plan: central ducted on existing ducts, or ductless multi-zone for hydronic homes
- Oil tank removal: pumped out, cut, removed, fill and vent pipes taken out, documentation for your insurer
- Burner and furnace (or boiler) removal or boiler kept as backup on hydronic homes
- Cold-climate heat pump install and commissioning, panel upgrade by our ESA tech if needed
- Post-retrofit audit and filing of the Oil-to-HP bonus and HRSP on your behalf
Which rebates apply to oil homes?
| Program | For | Up to |
|---|---|---|
| Oil-to-HP bonus | Oil-heated homes switching to a heat pump | $7,100 |
| Home Renovation Savings Program | Eligible Ontario homes, by tier and income | $5,000-$10,000 |
Order matters exactly as it does for gas homes: pre-audit, install, post-audit, then filing. Gas-heated? You’ll want Ontario heat pump rebate 2026 instead.
Ducted or ductless?
Forced-air oil furnaces have ducts, so a cold-climate central heat pump with an air handler goes on the existing trunk lines after a static pressure check. Oil boiler homes with radiators go ductless multi-zone, with the boiler kept as backup or removed with the tank. Either way: cold-climate heat pumps only.
Rosedale: two winters, zero backup
Converted from oil to a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat 4-ton with an air handler in October, oil tank removed the same week. Two winters, zero backup heat needed. The Oil-to-HP bonus came through at $7,100 and HRSP added $4,800, covering 65% of the $18,500 project. The equipment is covered on our Mitsubishi page.
Going fully electric?
Once oil is gone, the water heater is often the only fossil-fuel appliance left. A heat pump water heater finishes the job.
