AC to heat pump replacement in Toronto. Your central air is done, so put the money into a Toronto heat pump instead. Same ducts, same coil location, same summer cooling. Then it heats the house all winter and takes most of the load off the furnace, or replaces it outright. Rebates are the trigger. A like-for-like AC gets nothing. A listed heat pump with the pre-audit can qualify for Enbridge HER+ and HRSP. Five business days from accepted quote.
Why replace a dead AC with a heat pump?
Because it’s the same machine with a reversing valve. A heat pump cools exactly like central AC in July. In winter it runs backwards and heats. You pay a bit more upfront than for a new AC and get:
- Year-round use instead of four months
- Lower gas bills because the furnace only runs in the coldest hours
- Rebate eligibility a new AC never has
- Better summer comfort from an inverter compressor that runs long and slow, pulling more humidity out
What changes in the house?
Almost nothing you’ll see.
| Part | What happens |
|---|---|
| Outdoor unit | Old AC condenser out, heat pump in, same pad or a raised bracket |
| Indoor coil | New cased coil (A-coil) on top of the furnace, same spot |
| Ducts | Reused. Static pressure checked |
| Thermostat | Replaced with a dual-fuel thermostat |
| Furnace | Stays, runs only below the switchover |
How do we size it?
Here’s the trap. AC tonnage was sized for cooling, and Toronto’s heating load is bigger than its cooling load. So we run a Manual J for heating at design temperature and check cooling against it. Sometimes the heat pump comes in a half ton bigger than the old AC. Sometimes the same. Inverter equipment like the Daikin Fit DX17VSS or Carrier Infinity 24VNA6 covers a wide range without short-cycling in summer.
Do you keep the furnace?
Most AC-to-heat-pump jobs keep it, which makes the system a dual-fuel hybrid. The dual-fuel thermostat runs the heat pump first and hands off to gas near -18C or wherever the economic balance point lands on your rates. When the furnace eventually dies, swap it for an air handler and you’re full-electric with no change outside.
Already thinking full-electric? That’s a furnace to heat pump conversion, and it can qualify for a larger fuel-switch rebate.
How do the rebates work here?
The pre-retrofit audit has to happen before install. In a July heat wave that’s the step people skip, and it costs them thousands. We book the audit first, often within days, then install. After commissioning, the post-audit, then we file HER+ and HRSP for you. Amounts are up to and depend on program terms. Details on Ontario heat pump rebate 2026.
Case in point: Leslieville
2003 central AC died in a July heat wave. The owners booked the pre-audit, then swapped to a Daikin Fit 2.5-ton on the existing furnace with a new cased coil and dual-fuel thermostat. Cooling was back in five business days. The furnace now runs only below the switchover. $11,300 installed.
We do these swaps all over downtown Toronto and Scarborough. If your ducts are tired or the upstairs runs hot, read central ducted heat pumps first. Or book the load calc.
