Heat pump installation in Toronto starts with a written Manual J heat loss calculation, not a square-foot guess. We install cold-climate models only, Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat MSZ-FH, Daikin Fit DX17VSS and Fujitsu AOU-U36, and we size them so the house holds temperature through a bad February week without strip heat. Red Seal HVAC, TSSA gas and ESA electrical are on our own payroll. One quote, one crew, five business days.
What does a heat pump installation in Toronto include?
Everything needed to go from quote to a running, registered system. No line items that show up later.
- Manual J load calculation (HRAI method) and Manual S equipment selection, written and yours to keep
- Outdoor unit on a raised pad or wall bracket above the snow line, with a base pan heater on cold-climate models
- Indoor side: matched air handler, cased coil on your furnace, or ductless wall heads
- New line set, brazed under nitrogen, nitrogen pressure test, then a micron vacuum below 500 microns before the refrigerant is released
- Electrical disconnect, breaker and panel tie-in under an ESA permit
- Thermostat setup, startup and full commissioning readings logged
- Manufacturer registration, plus Enbridge HER+ and HRSP paperwork when the home qualifies
Most installs land on day 5 and take 6-8 hours on site. Bigger multi-zone jobs sometimes run into a second morning.
Which heat pump types do we install?
Every format, as long as the equipment is rated for a Toronto winter. The format follows the house, not the other way around.
| System | Best fit | Installed (before rebates) |
|---|---|---|
| Ductless single-zone | One room, basement suite, addition | $4,500-$7,000 |
| Multi-zone (2-3 heads) | Radiator and baseboard homes | $8,000-$15,000 |
| Central ducted 3-ton | Homes with ducts and a tired furnace or AC | $10,000-$16,000 |
| Cold-climate 4-ton | Larger homes, full-electric | $14,000-$22,000 |
| Dual-fuel hybrid | Gas line already in, keep the furnace | $12,000-$20,000 |
Century homes in Riverdale and the Annex on cast iron radiators usually go ductless multi-zone. Mid-century North York bungalows with original ducts are a clean central ducted install. Gas homes that want a safety net go dual-fuel hybrid.
How do we size it?
The Manual J models heat loss room by room at Toronto design temperature: wall and attic insulation, window area and type, basement depth, air leakage. That number picks the tonnage. Manual S then matches it to a specific outdoor unit and indoor unit using the manufacturer’s extended capacity tables at -15C and -25C.
Why it matters. An oversized heat pump short-cycles, never dehumidifies properly in July and wears the inverter compressor early. An undersized one leans on 10-20 kW of electric strip heat at 1:1 and the hydro bill triples. The Lawrence Park job on this page came out at 3 tons. Another contractor had quoted 4 off the square footage.
What drives the cost of a Toronto install?
Five things move a quote around inside the ranges above.
| Factor | Why it moves the price |
|---|---|
| Tonnage from Manual J | Bigger outdoor unit, bigger air handler |
| Electrical panel | 100A service often needs a 200A upgrade |
| Line set length + route | Long runs up a three-storey semi add copper and labour |
| Ductwork | Undersized returns get fixed before the heat pump goes in |
| Outdoor placement | Wall brackets, raised stands and lot-line clearances on narrow lots |
We price all of it on the first visit. Every quote lists the model numbers, the panel work and the rebate estimate. See the full Toronto heat pump price list.
When is it time to install a heat pump?
The best time is before something fails. In practice most of our installs follow one of these:
- Furnace at 15-25 years. Heat exchanger warnings, rising repair bills. A furnace to heat pump conversion usually beats a like-for-like furnace once rebates land.
- Central AC is dead. Replacing it with a heat pump costs a little more than a new AC and heats the house all winter too.
- Oil or electric baseboard. The highest operating costs in the city, and the fastest payback.
- Renovation or addition. New space with no ducts, or a basement suite that needs its own zone.
DIY kit, big-box install or a licensed crew?
DIY mini-split kits skip the nitrogen test and the micron vacuum, void most parts coverage and cannot qualify for HER+ or HRSP. Big-box installs often subcontract the electrical and stock mild-climate units that cut out near -15C. Our crew holds Red Seal HVAC, TSSA gas and ESA electrical tickets, HRAI certified contractor status and EnergyStar dealer authorization, so the work is permitted, inspected and rebate-eligible. Nothing subcontracted.
Permits, panel work and rebates
We file the ESA permit, handle any TSSA gas capping or reconnection, and book the pre-retrofit audit before install day so your rebate file stays alive. Enbridge HER+ pays up to $7,100 for a cold-climate heat pump replacing gas. The Home Renovation Savings Program adds $5,000-$10,000 by tier and income. The full breakdown is on our Ontario heat pump rebate 2026 page.
