## Mississauga Heat Pump Problems in 1970s-90s Homes

### Original builder furnace and AC failing in the same year

**What you notice**The AC struggled through last summer, the furnace is throwing codes, and both carry the same install date on the label.

**Why it happens here**Erin Mills was built out as a planned new town from the early 1970s, with Meadowvale and Streetsville growing alongside, so whole streets got their equipment within a few years. Those systems are now reaching the end together.

Erin Mills went up as a planned new town from the early 1970s, so entire streets share the same equipment age. Old Port Credit Village is a Heritage Conservation District, so outdoor unit placement there is planned with the designation in mind.

Does Alectra change anything compared with Toronto Hydro?

It changes the electricity rate side of the running-cost and dual-fuel balance point math. Alectra serves Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan. The rebates stay the same.

What does a central heat pump cost in an Erin Mills house?

Central ducted 3-ton $10,000-$16,000, cold-climate 4-ton $14,000-$22,000, installed before rebates. Many Erin Mills homes date from the 1970s build-out, so we check the ducts first.

My Port Credit house is close to the lake. Any special considerations?

Wind and drift. We raise and shelter the outdoor unit and turn the intake off the wind so it defrosts less often. Inside the Old Port Credit Village heritage district, we also plan placement around the designation.

Can you replace the PTAC in my Square One area condo?

Yes. We review the Status Certificate, prepare the board package and submit it. Approval usually takes 2-4 weeks.

My furnace and AC are both original. Should I replace both?

A central heat pump can replace the AC and either replace the furnace or pair with it as dual-fuel. That is usually cheaper than a new furnace plus a new AC once rebates land.
