## Why resize before replacing?

The old unit is not a reliable guide. Plenty of 2000s-era installs in North York and Richmond Hill were sized off square footage, then the homeowner added insulation or new windows. A fresh Manual J at Toronto design temperature often comes in smaller. The Willowdale case on this page dropped half a ton. Smaller unit, longer quieter run cycles, better humidity control in July, lower bill the next month.

## Like-for-like or upgrade?

Like-for-like makes sense if the old unit was sized right and worked well. Otherwise upgrade. A cold-climate model on R32 or R454B, an AHRI-matched coil, HSPF2 and SEER2 numbers well above what you had. The efficiency jump alone pays back a chunk of the difference, and a cold-climate unit can qualify for Enbridge HER+ and HRSP when the pre-audit is done in time.

## How does a 48-hour emergency replacement work?

Day 1: diagnose, confirm it is not repairable, run a quick Manual J, quote. Source the unit. Temporary heat in if the house is dropping fast. Day 2: remove the old unit, recover the refrigerant, set the new pad or bracket, install, vacuum, commission. You have heat by the second evening in most cases.

The catch is rebates. The pre-audit must happen before install. On a 48-hour timeline we tell you upfront whether it fits, or whether a short repair to bridge a week protects a rebate worth thousands.

## What happens to the old unit?

Refrigerant is recovered into certified cylinders on a scale, not vented. The old outdoor unit and coil are disconnected safely and hauled away. If the line set is the right size, clean and compatible, we pressure test and reuse it. Otherwise we run new copper.

How much does heat pump replacement cost in Toronto?

How fast can you replace a dead heat pump in winter?

Emergency winter replacement within 48 hours. If the house is losing heat fast, we can often get temporary heat in while the new unit is sourced.

Can I still get rebates on an emergency replacement?

Sometimes. The pre-retrofit audit has to happen before install. On a 48-hour job that is tight, so we tell you upfront whether time allows or whether a repair-to-bridge makes more sense to protect the rebate.

Should I replace like-for-like?

Not without a Manual J. Many older heat pumps were sized by square footage and run oversized. A cold-climate unit sized properly often costs less to run and is smaller than what came out.

Is my old R410A unit worth fixing?

If it is 12-15+ years old and the repair is a third or more of a new system, usually not. R410A is being phased down, so parts and refrigerant keep getting more expensive.

Do I need to replace the indoor coil too?

Usually yes. A matched outdoor unit and coil is AHRI rated as a system. Mismatched pairs underperform and can affect manufacturer parts coverage.

Can I reuse my existing line set?

Sometimes, if it is the right size, in good shape and compatible with the new refrigerant. We pressure test it and flush when reuse makes sense. Otherwise we run new.

What happens to the old unit?

We recover the refrigerant into certified cylinders, disconnect everything safely and haul the old equipment away for proper disposal.
