## What heat pump problems do we fix most?

Toronto winters are hard on outdoor units. These are the calls we take every week.

- **Iced outdoor coil.** Failed defrost control board, bad coil sensor or a drain path that freezes. Swapped from stock, tested through two defrost cycles.
- **Blowing cold in heat mode.** Stuck reversing valve, low charge, or the unit locked out on a fault code.
- **Not turning on.** Failed contactor, capacitor, blown fuse or a tripped breaker from a shorted component.
- **Short-cycling.** Oversized unit, dirty coil, low refrigerant or a misplaced thermostat sensor.
- **Water leaking indoors.** Clogged or frozen condensate drain, failed condensate pump on a wall head.
- **Inverter board faults.** Error codes on Mitsubishi, Daikin and Fujitsu inverters. Board vs compressor tested first.

## How does our diagnostic work?

A real diagnostic, not a filter swap and a guess. We pull the fault codes, check the electrical side (capacitors, contactor, boards, fuses, breaker), measure refrigerant pressures and calculate superheat and subcooling, verify airflow, then force a defrost cycle to watch it run. That tells us whether the problem is controls, charge, airflow or the compressor itself.

Then you get a written repair quote before any work starts.

## What does heat pump repair cost?

| Repair | Typical Toronto price |
| --- | --- |
| Diagnostic | $150-$250 |
| Refrigerant leak repair | $300-$1,200 |
| Thermostat replacement | $350-$650 |
| Defrost control board | $400-$800 |
| Compressor repair or replacement | $800-$2,500 |

Price depends on part, brand and access. A wall-bracket unit two storeys up costs more labour than one on a pad. Manufacturer parts coverage can take the part cost off when the unit is registered and in term. We check the serial and file the claim. Full list on our

pricing page

.

## Repair or replace?

We’ll tell you straight. Repair makes sense on a younger unit with a single failed part. Replacement starts to make sense when three things line up:

1. The unit is 12-15+ years old on R410A, which is being phased down
2. The repair is a third or more of the cost of a new system
3. It was undersized or oversized to begin with, so it never ran right

In that case we price both and put them in writing. A new cold-climate unit can also qualify for rebates when the pre-audit is done first. See

heat pump replacement

[/heat-pump-replacement-toronto/ →](/heat-pump-replacement-toronto/)

 for that path.

## Which brands do we repair?

All the common ones. Daikin, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, LG, Carrier, Gree, plus most builder-grade units. We stock defrost boards, coil sensors, capacitors, contactors and fan motors for the lines that fail most in Toronto. Named-part problems have their own pages:

compressor repair

 and

refrigerant leak repair

[/heat-pump-refrigerant-leak-repair-toronto/ →](/heat-pump-refrigerant-leak-repair-toronto/)

.

## How do I avoid the next repair?

Annual service. Most failures we see started as a dirty coil, a slow drain or a weak capacitor that a tune-up would have caught. Our

heat pump maintenance

[/heat-pump-maintenance-toronto/ →](/heat-pump-maintenance-toronto/)

visit covers coil cleaning, drains, charge check and a defrost test before winter.

The Problem

## What goes wrong with repair in Toronto

**1\. Unit runs but doesn't heat** Airflow, charge, sensors and defrost faults all look the same from inside the house.

**2\. Short-cycling and noise** Rapid on-off cycles wear parts and signal sizing or charge problems.

**3\. Repair quotes without a diagnosis** Some shops quote parts before testing. We test first and put the findings in writing.

Transparent Pricing

## How much does repair cost in Toronto?

Installed ranges for the GTA, diagnostic and common repairs. Every quote includes the written Manual J, ESA permit, electrical disconnect, commissioning and rebate paperwork. Exact numbers after the load calc.

Ontario Rebate Stack

## How much can rebates take off the invoice?

Two programs stack on eligible homes. We book the audits, fill both applications and submit them on your behalf. 40-60% of install cost is commonly offset.

Program 1

### Enbridge HER+

up to $7,100

Cold-climate heat pump replacing gas heat. Pre-retrofit audit first.

Program 2

### Home Renovation Savings Program

$5,000-$10,000

By efficiency tier and household income. Listed equipment only.

Combined

### Stacked total

up to $14,100

Pre-retrofit audit $400-$600, refunded upon install. Post-audit after commissioning.

1. **1\. Pre-audit** booked before install day. Skip it and the file is usually dead.
2. **2\. Install** a NEEP / NRCan listed cold-climate model, sized by Manual J.
3. **3\. Post-audit + file.** We submit HER+ and HRSP for you and track the cheque.

Rebates are "up to" amounts, depend on program terms, audits, equipment listing and household eligibility, and are never guaranteed.

Written Manual J

## Why do we run a Manual J before any quote?

Because tonnage decides everything else. Comfort at -25C, hydro bill, compressor life, rebate eligibility. A written Manual J heat loss calc per HRAI standard comes first, then Manual S equipment selection, then the price. Free, and yours to keep.

Manual J Manual S Manual D when needed HRAI standard

- Repair-or-replace in writing If the unit is old R410A and the repair crosses the threshold, you get both prices on paper.
- Sizing recheck on replacement Plenty of older Toronto units were oversized. Manual J tells us before we order the new one.
- No surprise scope Diagnostic first, written quote second, work third. Nothing starts without your sign-off.

How much does heat pump repair cost in Toronto?

Diagnostic $150-$250. Refrigerant leak $300-$1,200. Thermostat $350-$650. Defrost board $400-$800. Compressor $800-$2,500. You get a written price before any repair work starts.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air?

Often it is in defrost, which is normal for a few minutes. If it lasts, common causes are a failed defrost board or sensor, low refrigerant from a leak, a stuck reversing valve or a thermostat set to the wrong mode. A diagnostic tells us which.

My outdoor unit is covered in ice. Is that normal?

Light frost, yes. A solid block of ice, no. That points to a defrost control board or sensor failure, a frozen drain path or low charge. Turn it to emergency heat if you have it and call us.

Do you repair brands you did not install?

Yes. We service Daikin, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, LG, Carrier, Gree and most other major brands, and stock the parts that fail most often on the common lines.

Should I repair or replace my heat pump?

Rough rule: if the unit is past 12-15 years, on R410A, and the repair is over a third of a new system, look at replacement. We put both prices in writing so you can decide.

How fast can you come out?

No-heat calls get same-day diagnostic dispatch, phone answered 24/7. Non-urgent repairs usually get a window within a few business days.

What does the diagnostic include?

Electrical checks on capacitors, contactors and boards, refrigerant pressures with superheat and subcooling, airflow and filter, defrost operation and thermostat settings. Then a written repair quote.

Is the repair covered by the manufacturer?

Parts may be, if the unit was registered and is within the manufacturer's parts coverage terms. We check the serial number, file the claim when it applies, and quote labour separately.
