Heat pump maintenance in Toronto. Your heat pump works all year, heating in January and cooling in July, so it needs a real tune-up, not a filter swap. Coil cleaning, condensate drain clearing, refrigerant and superheat check, defrost and base pan heater test, electrical torque check and a reversing valve test. $250-$450 a year for a single system, $450-$750 for dual. Records kept for your manufacturer registration.

## What does a heat pump tune-up include?

**Indoor side**

- Filter check or replacement (MERV rated to suit the blower)
- Indoor coil cleaned
- Blower wheel cleaned, deep clean on ductless wall heads
- Drain pan and condensate line cleared and treated, condensate pump tested

**Outdoor side**

- Coil rinsed low pressure, fins straightened
- Fan motor and blade checked
- **Base pan heater** and **defrost cycle** tested before freeze season
- Pad or bracket level, snow clearance, roof drip check

**Electrical + refrigerant**

- Connections torqued, capacitor and contactor tested, amp draw recorded
- Refrigerant pressures with **superheat and subcooling** compared to spec
- **Reversing valve test** heat to cool and back
- Thermostat and lockout settings checked

## Why does a heat pump need more care than a furnace?

It runs twice the hours. A furnace sits idle all summer and an AC sits idle all winter. A heat pump works both seasons, and in Toronto it works hardest during wet, near-freezing weeks when defrost cycles every 30-45 minutes. A weak capacitor, a slow drain or a dirty coil that would limp along on an AC turns into a no-heat call in January.

Most of our

repair

[/heat-pump-repair-toronto/ →](/heat-pump-repair-toronto/)

calls started as something a tune-up would have caught.

## When should you book?

| System use | Recommended |
| --- | --- |
| Single system, normal use | Once a year, early fall |
| Heavy year-round or rental | Twice a year, spring + fall |
| Multi-zone ductless | Once a year plus a deep clean every 2-3 years |
| Coastal or lakeside (Mimico, Bluffs) | Fall visit, check coil for salt and debris |

Fall is best. We test defrost and the base pan heater before the first hard frost, which is when weak parts fail.

## What do maintenance records do for you?

Manufacturer parts coverage terms on Mitsubishi, Daikin and Fujitsu often expect regular service. We log readings, photos and dates on every visit so a parts claim later isn’t denied for lack of history. Good records also help when you sell the house.

## What can you do between visits?

- Clean washable filters monthly in heavy use
- Keep 60 cm clear around the outdoor unit, and keep snow and ice off it
- Make sure roof runoff isn’t dripping onto the top of the unit
- Don’t cover it in winter. It needs airflow to heat
- Call if the outdoor unit turns into a block of ice or you hear grinding

## Musty smell from a ductless head?

That’s the blower wheel and coil growing mould from dust and condensation. Filter cleaning doesn’t reach it. A deep clean does: drip bag on, coil treated, wheel brushed and rinsed. The Beaches case study on this page was a five-year-old Mitsubishi multi-zone with three musty heads. Output back to spec before the first frost.

The Problem

## What goes wrong with maintenance in Toronto

**1\. Dirty coils and filters** Dust and debris cut airflow, raise energy use and hide early faults.

**2\. Small leaks go unnoticed** Slow refrigerant loss shows up only as weak heating, until the compressor suffers.

**3\. Warranty risk** Some manufacturer terms expect documented annual service.

Program 1

### Enbridge HER+

up to $7,100

Cold-climate heat pump replacing gas heat. Pre-retrofit audit first.

Program 2

### Home Renovation Savings Program

$5,000-$10,000

By efficiency tier and household income. Listed equipment only.

Combined

### Stacked total

up to $14,100

Pre-retrofit audit $400-$600, refunded upon install. Post-audit after commissioning.

1. **1\. Pre-audit** booked before install day. Skip it and the file is usually dead.
2. **2\. Install** a NEEP / NRCan listed cold-climate model, sized by Manual J.
3. **3\. Post-audit + file.** We submit HER+ and HRSP for you and track the cheque.

Rebates are "up to" amounts, depend on program terms, audits, equipment listing and household eligibility, and are never guaranteed.

Written Manual J

## Why do we run a Manual J before any quote?

Because tonnage decides everything else. Comfort at -25C, hydro bill, compressor life, rebate eligibility. A written Manual J heat loss calc per HRAI standard comes first, then Manual S equipment selection, then the price. Free, and yours to keep.

Manual J Manual S Manual D when needed HRAI standard

- Repair-or-replace in writing If the unit is old R410A and the repair crosses the threshold, you get both prices on paper.
- Sizing recheck on replacement Plenty of older Toronto units were oversized. Manual J tells us before we order the new one.
- No surprise scope Diagnostic first, written quote second, work third. Nothing starts without your sign-off.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

At least once a year, ideally in the fall. Heavy year-round systems do best with two visits, spring and fall.

How much does heat pump maintenance cost in Toronto?

$250-$450 a year for a single system, $450-$750 for dual systems. Multi-head ductless deep cleans sit at the upper end.

What is included in a tune-up?

Indoor and outdoor coil cleaning, condensate drain clearing, refrigerant charge with superheat and subcooling, defrost and base pan heater test, electrical torque check, capacitor and contactor test, and a reversing valve test.

Why does my ductless head smell musty?

Dust and moisture on the blower wheel and coil grow mould. A deep clean with the wheel brushed and the coil treated fixes it. Filter cleaning alone does not.

Does maintenance affect my warranty?

Manufacturer parts coverage terms often expect regular maintenance. We keep service records so a claim is not denied for lack of history.

Can I clean the heat pump myself?

Rinse the outdoor coil gently and clean washable filters monthly, yes. Leave refrigerant, electrical and blower wheel work to a licensed tech.

Should I cover my outdoor unit in winter?

No. A heat pump runs all winter and needs airflow. Keep snow and ice clear around it and make sure nothing drips on it from the roof.

What if you find a problem?

We quote it in writing before doing anything. Small parts like capacitors are usually on the truck and can be swapped the same visit with your approval.
