Heat pump installation in Toronto starts with a written Manual J heat loss calculation, not a square-foot guess. We install cold-climate models only, Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat MSZ-FH, Daikin Fit DX17VSS and Fujitsu AOU-U36, and we size them so the house holds temperature through a bad February week without strip heat. Red Seal HVAC, TSSA gas and ESA electrical are on our own payroll. One quote, one crew, five business days.

## What does a heat pump installation in Toronto include?

Everything needed to go from quote to a running, registered system. No line items that show up later.

- **Manual J load calculation** (HRAI method) and **Manual S equipment selection**, written and yours to keep
- Outdoor unit on a raised pad or wall bracket above the snow line, with a base pan heater on cold-climate models
- Indoor side: matched air handler, cased coil on your furnace, or ductless wall heads
- New line set, brazed under nitrogen, nitrogen pressure test, then a **micron vacuum** below 500 microns before the refrigerant is released
- Electrical disconnect, breaker and panel tie-in under an **ESA permit**
- Thermostat setup, startup and full **commissioning** readings logged
- Manufacturer registration, plus Enbridge HER+ and HRSP paperwork when the home qualifies

Most installs land on day 5 and take 6-8 hours on site. Bigger multi-zone jobs sometimes run into a second morning.

## Which heat pump types do we install?

Every format, as long as the equipment is rated for a Toronto winter. The format follows the house, not the other way around.

| System | Best fit | Installed (before rebates) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Ductless single-zone | One room, basement suite, addition | $4,500-$7,000 |
| Multi-zone (2-3 heads) | Radiator and baseboard homes | $8,000-$15,000 |
| Central ducted 3-ton | Homes with ducts and a tired furnace or AC | $10,000-$16,000 |
| Cold-climate 4-ton | Larger homes, full-electric | $14,000-$22,000 |
| Dual-fuel hybrid | Gas line already in, keep the furnace | $12,000-$20,000 |

Century homes in Riverdale and the Annex on cast iron radiators usually go

. Mid-century North York bungalows with original ducts are a clean

. Gas homes that want a safety net go

.

## How do we size it?

The Manual J models heat loss room by room at Toronto design temperature: wall and attic insulation, window area and type, basement depth, air leakage. That number picks the tonnage. Manual S then matches it to a specific outdoor unit and indoor unit using the manufacturer’s extended capacity tables at -15C and -25C.

Why it matters. An oversized heat pump short-cycles, never dehumidifies properly in July and wears the inverter compressor early. An undersized one leans on 10-20 kW of electric strip heat at 1:1 and the hydro bill triples. The Lawrence Park job on this page came out at 3 tons. Another contractor had quoted 4 off the square footage.

## What drives the cost of a Toronto install?

Five things move a quote around inside the ranges above.

| Factor | Why it moves the price |
| --- | --- |
| Tonnage from Manual J | Bigger outdoor unit, bigger air handler |
| Electrical panel | 100A service often needs a 200A upgrade |
| Line set length + route | Long runs up a three-storey semi add copper and labour |
| Ductwork | Undersized returns get fixed before the heat pump goes in |
| Outdoor placement | Wall brackets, raised stands and lot-line clearances on narrow lots |

We price all of it on the first visit. Every quote lists the model numbers, the panel work and the rebate estimate. See the full

## When is it time to install a heat pump?

The best time is before something fails. In practice most of our installs follow one of these:

- **Furnace at 15-25 years.** Heat exchanger warnings, rising repair bills. A

    furnace to heat pump conversion

    [/furnace-to-heat-pump-conversion-toronto/ →](/furnace-to-heat-pump-conversion-toronto/)

usually beats a like-for-like furnace once rebates land.
- **Central AC is dead.** Replacing it with a heat pump costs a little more than a new AC and heats the house all winter too.
- **Oil or electric baseboard.** The highest operating costs in the city, and the fastest payback.
- **Renovation or addition.** New space with no ducts, or a basement suite that needs its own zone.

## DIY kit, big-box install or a licensed crew?

DIY mini-split kits skip the nitrogen test and the micron vacuum, void most parts coverage and cannot qualify for HER+ or HRSP. Big-box installs often subcontract the electrical and stock mild-climate units that cut out near -15C. Our crew holds Red Seal HVAC, TSSA gas and ESA electrical tickets, HRAI certified contractor status and EnergyStar dealer authorization, so the work is permitted, inspected and rebate-eligible. Nothing subcontracted.

## Permits, panel work and rebates

We file the ESA permit, handle any TSSA gas capping or reconnection, and book the pre-retrofit audit before install day so your rebate file stays alive. Enbridge HER+ pays up to $7,100 for a cold-climate heat pump replacing gas. The Home Renovation Savings Program adds $5,000-$10,000 by tier and income. The full breakdown is on our

The Problem

## What goes wrong with installation in Toronto

**1\. Oversized by guesswork** Square-foot sizing puts a 4-ton unit on a 3-ton house. It short-cycles, wears the compressor and never dehumidifies properly.

**2\. Mild-climate equipment** Units rated for coastal winters lose capacity below -15C and lean on strip heat all February.

**3\. Rebate steps done out of order** HER+ and HRSP only pay when audits happen in sequence. Miss one and the money is gone.

Ontario Rebate Stack

## How much can rebates take off the invoice?

Two programs stack on eligible homes. We book the audits, fill both applications and submit them on your behalf. 40-60% of install cost is commonly offset.

Program 1

### Enbridge HER+

up to $7,100

Cold-climate heat pump replacing gas heat. Pre-retrofit audit first.

Program 2

### Home Renovation Savings Program

$5,000-$10,000

By efficiency tier and household income. Listed equipment only.

Combined

### Stacked total

up to $14,100

Pre-retrofit audit $400-$600, refunded upon install. Post-audit after commissioning.

1. **1\. Pre-audit** booked before install day. Skip it and the file is usually dead.
2. **2\. Install** a NEEP / NRCan listed cold-climate model, sized by Manual J.
3. **3\. Post-audit + file.** We submit HER+ and HRSP for you and track the cheque.

Rebates are "up to" amounts, depend on program terms, audits, equipment listing and household eligibility, and are never guaranteed.

Written Manual J

## Why do we run a Manual J before any quote?

Because tonnage decides everything else. Comfort at -25C, hydro bill, compressor life, rebate eligibility. A written Manual J heat loss calc per HRAI standard comes first, then Manual S equipment selection, then the price. Free, and yours to keep.

Manual J Manual S Manual D when needed HRAI standard

- Room-by-room heat loss Walls, windows, attic, air leakage and Toronto design temperature. HRAI method, not square-foot guessing.
- Right tonnage, no strips Sized right, the heat pump carries February on its own. Oversized units short-cycle. Undersized ones lean on strip heat.
- Model numbers on the quote Outdoor unit, indoor unit or air handler, line set, disconnect, panel work. All listed.

How much does heat pump installation cost in Toronto?

Ductless single-zone $4,500-$7,000. Multi-zone with 2-3 heads $8,000-$15,000. Central ducted 3-ton $10,000-$16,000. Cold-climate 4-ton $14,000-$22,000. Dual-fuel hybrid $12,000-$20,000. Those are installed prices before rebates, with the Manual J, ESA permit, disconnect and commissioning included.

How long does a heat pump install take?

5 business days from accepted quote to a running system. Install day itself is 6-8 hours for a standard central or multi-zone job. Emergency winter replacements are prioritized within 48 hours.

Do I need a panel upgrade for a heat pump?

Sometimes. Many older Toronto homes still run 100A service. A cold-climate central heat pump plus an EV charger or a backup strip kit can push past that. The Manual J and a load check on the first visit tell us, and our ESA-licensed electrician does the upgrade in-house if it is needed.

Which brand should I pick?

Pick the model, not the logo. For whole-home heat in Toronto we install Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat MSZ-FH, Daikin Fit DX17VSS and Fujitsu AOU-U36 because all three hold 100% capacity at -15C. The right one depends on your lot width, ducts and whether you keep the furnace.

Can I keep my gas furnace as backup?

Yes, as a dual-fuel hybrid. The heat pump carries most of the winter and a dual-fuel thermostat hands off to the furnace below your balance point, often near -18C. Full-electric can qualify for higher fuel-switch rebates, so we price both.

Will rebates cover part of the install?

On eligible homes, Enbridge HER+ up to $7,100 plus HRSP $5,000-$10,000 commonly offsets 40-60% of the invoice. The pre-retrofit audit has to happen before install day. We book it and submit the applications for you. Amounts are always up to, never guaranteed.

Where does the outdoor unit go on a narrow lot?

On a raised pad or a wall bracket above the snow line, away from the neighbour's bedroom window and clear of roof drip. On tight side yards we often use a side-discharge Daikin Fit. Toronto's Chapter 591 noise bylaw is checked before we place it.

What warranty comes with the install?

Two layers. Manufacturer parts coverage per Mitsubishi, Daikin or Fujitsu registration terms, which we register on install day. Plus our in-house workmanship warranty on the install, electrical work and refrigerant line routing.
