Furnace to heat pump conversion in Toronto, for owners of 15-25 year old gas furnaces. Two paths. A full-electric cold-climate heat pump that replaces the furnace outright, or a dual-fuel hybrid that keeps the furnace for the coldest hours. A written Manual J decides the tonnage. A static pressure test decides whether the ducts need a return added. Enbridge HER+ pays up to $7,100 for a cold-climate unit replacing gas, and HRSP adds $5,000-$10,000. Our TSSA gas tech caps or reconnects the gas line in-house.

## Is your furnace ready to be replaced?

Most conversions start with one of these:

- Furnace is **15-25 years old**, mid-efficiency, rising repair bills
- A tech left a **heat exchanger warning** or red tag
- The **central AC is also near the end**, so both would need replacing anyway
- You want to get off gas before the next carbon charge or rate change

A new furnace plus a new AC costs about what a heat pump costs, and the heat pump comes with rebates the furnace doesn’t.

## Full-electric or dual-fuel: how do you choose?

| | Full-electric heat pump | Dual-fuel hybrid |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Furnace | Removed, gas capped | Kept as backup |
| Coldest hours | Cold-climate heat pump runs to -30C | Switches to gas near -18C |
| Typical install | $10,000-$22,000 by size | $12,000-$20,000 |
| Rebate path | Larger fuel-switch amount (HER+) | Eligibility differs |
| Gas bill | Heating gas gone | Small winter gas use |

Neither is wrong. Full-electric with a

cold-climate heat pump

[/cold-climate-heat-pump-toronto/ →](/cold-climate-heat-pump-toronto/)

makes sense when the furnace is old and the panel can handle it. A

dual-fuel hybrid

[/hybrid-heat-pump-toronto/ →](/hybrid-heat-pump-toronto/)

makes sense when the furnace is newer or you want gas as a safety net.

## Will your ducts carry heat pump airflow?

Heat pumps deliver cooler supply air than a furnace, so they move more of it. Toronto homes built around furnaces sometimes have small returns, especially upstairs. We measure static pressure and check CFM per ton before quoting. Most homes pass or need one added return. Some need Manual D duct design on a section. Rarely a full rebuild. The Davisville semi on this page passed with the original trunk lines.

## What happens on conversion day?

1. Outdoor unit set on a raised pad or wall bracket
2. Air handler installed in the furnace spot, or a cased coil on the furnace for dual-fuel
3. Line set brazed under nitrogen, pressure tested, micron vacuum
4. **Gas line capped** at the furnace by our TSSA technician, or reconnected for dual-fuel
5. Electrical by our ESA-licensed tech, thermostat setup, commissioning

Stove, dryer and water heater stay on gas unless you’re going all-electric. Want the last gas appliance gone? Add a

heat pump water heater

[/heat-pump-water-heater-toronto/ →](/heat-pump-water-heater-toronto/)

 and pull the meter.

## How do the rebates work on a conversion?

The pre-retrofit audit happens before install day. We book it. After commissioning, the post-audit, then we submit Enbridge HER+ and HRSP for you. 40-60% of the install is commonly offset on eligible homes. All amounts are up to and depend on program terms. The step-by-step is on our

Ontario heat pump rebate 2026

[/ontario-heat-pump-rebate-2026/ →](/ontario-heat-pump-rebate-2026/)

 page.

## What will it cost to run?

Depends on your Enbridge rate, your Toronto Hydro plan (TOU or ULO) and how tight the house is. A cold-climate heat pump runs near a 3:1 COP in most winter weather and stays above 1:1 even in deep cold. Mid-efficiency furnaces run at about 80% AFUE. We put a running-cost estimate on both quotes so the comparison is real.

The Problem

## What goes wrong with furnace conversion in Toronto

**1\. A furnace at end of life** A 15-25 year gas furnace can fail in January, and emergency replacement leaves little time to compare options.

**2\. Fear of losing heat** Many owners worry a heat pump alone won't keep up, so they stay with gas by default.

**3\. Rebates tied to the process** HER+ and HRSP depend on pre-audits and eligible equipment, so a rushed swap can cost thousands.

Transparent Pricing

## How much does furnace conversion cost in Toronto?

Installed ranges for the GTA, installed, before rebates. Every quote includes the written Manual J, ESA permit, electrical disconnect, commissioning and rebate paperwork. Exact numbers after the load calc.

Ontario Rebate Stack

## How much can rebates take off the invoice?

Two programs stack on eligible homes. We book the audits, fill both applications and submit them on your behalf. 40-60% of install cost is commonly offset.

Program 1

### Enbridge HER+

Written Manual J

## Why do we run a Manual J before any quote?

Because tonnage decides everything else. Comfort at -25C, hydro bill, compressor life, rebate eligibility. A written Manual J heat loss calc per HRAI standard comes first, then Manual S equipment selection, then the price. Free, and yours to keep.

Manual J Manual S Manual D when needed HRAI standard

- Room-by-room heat loss Walls, windows, attic, air leakage and Toronto design temperature. HRAI method, not square-foot guessing.
- Right tonnage, no strips Sized right, the heat pump carries February on its own. Oversized units short-cycle. Undersized ones lean on strip heat.
- Model numbers on the quote Outdoor unit, indoor unit or air handler, line set, disconnect, panel work. All listed.

How much does a furnace to heat pump conversion cost in Toronto?

Central ducted 3-ton $10,000-$16,000. Dual-fuel hybrid $12,000-$20,000. Cold-climate 4-ton full-electric $14,000-$22,000. Installed before rebates, with gas capping or reconnection included.

Full-electric or dual-fuel, which is better?

Full-electric retires the furnace and can qualify for the larger fuel-switch rebate. Dual-fuel keeps the furnace for the coldest hours, often below -18C. Both work in Toronto. We price both so you can compare.

Will my existing ducts work with a heat pump?

Usually. Heat pumps move more air at lower supply temperatures than a furnace, so we test static pressure and check returns. Many homes need one added return. A full duct rebuild is rare.

How much can rebates cover?

Enbridge HER+ up to $7,100 for a cold-climate heat pump replacing gas, plus HRSP $5,000-$10,000. 40-60% of the install is commonly offset on eligible homes. Always up to, never guaranteed.

What happens to the gas line?

On full-electric, our TSSA gas tech caps the line to the furnace. If the stove, dryer or water heater still use gas, they stay connected. Go fully electric and you can have the meter pulled.

My furnace is 15 years old and still works. Should I wait?

Planning beats panic. A failure in January forces a rushed choice and can kill the rebate if there is no time for the pre-audit. Converting while the furnace still runs gives you the full rebate path.

Is a heat pump as warm as a gas furnace?

Supply air is cooler, around 35-45C instead of 50C+, but it runs longer and more evenly. Most owners say the house feels steadier. A properly sized cold-climate unit holds setpoint at -25C.

How long does the conversion take?

5 business days from accepted quote to running. Install day is 6-8 hours. Emergency winter conversions are prioritized within 48 hours.
