Ductless heat pump installs in Toronto for whole homes without ductwork. Radiator homes in the Annex, Rosedale and Riverdale. Baseboard bungalows in Scarborough. We put in cold-climate multi-zone systems with 2-5 indoor heads, with line sets routed through closets and exterior covers so the plaster stays put. Keep the boiler as backup or retire it. Either way you get AC for the first time and a lower heating bill. Just one room? That’s a

mini-split

.

## Is ductless right for your house?

Ductless multi-zone is the default answer when there are no ducts and no good way to add them.

- **Century homes on cast iron radiators.** Cabbagetown, Riverdale, the Annex, Rosedale. Hydronic heat, no AC, plaster you don’t want to touch.
- **Electric baseboard homes.** Post-war bungalows in Scarborough and Etobicoke. Baseboard runs at 1:1. A cold-climate heat pump runs near 3:1.
- **Additions and finished attics** that the furnace never reached.
- **Homes with tiny or failing ducts** where a rebuild costs more than the heat pump.

If you already have decent ducts, a

central ducted heat pump

[/central-ducted-heat-pump-toronto/ →](/central-ducted-heat-pump-toronto/)

 is usually the better fit.

## What indoor head types are there?

| Head type | Best for | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Wall-mounted head | Bedrooms, living rooms | Most common, lowest cost per zone |
| Floor console | Under windows, bay windows | Good where wall space is tight or trim matters |
| Ceiling cassette | Finished basements, open plans | Flush look, needs joist space |
| Slim ducted | 2-3 small rooms off one unit | Short duct runs hidden in a bulkhead |

Each head is sized from its own room load on the Manual J. Oversized heads short-cycle and feel clammy in July.

## How do we route lines without wrecking plaster?

Planning. We walk the house and find the shortest path from each head to the outdoor unit using closets, stacked closets between floors, chases beside chimneys and the exterior wall. Outside, lines run in a painted line hide cover that matches the brick or trim. Inside, you see a small cover behind each head and that’s it. The Cabbagetown row house on our Mitsubishi page was one day on site with three heads and no plaster repair.

## Which equipment do we use?

Cold-climate multi-zone outdoor units only: the Fujitsu AOU-U36 for 3-5 head systems and Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat MSZ-FH heads and multi-zone units. Both are rated to -30C with full capacity at -15C. Flare connections are torqued to spec, then nitrogen pressure tested and pulled to a deep micron vacuum. Most multi-zone leaks we fix for other companies trace back to a rushed flare. More on the brands:

Fujitsu

[/fujitsu-heat-pump-toronto/ →](/fujitsu-heat-pump-toronto/)

 and

Mitsubishi

[/mitsubishi-heat-pump-toronto/ →](/mitsubishi-heat-pump-toronto/)

.

## Keep the boiler or retire it?

Keep it, and the hydronic boiler becomes backup heat for the deepest cold. Most owners find the radiators barely come on. Retire it, and you drop a gas appliance, free up basement space and may change your rebate path. Our TSSA gas technician handles either way. We show both options in the quote.

## What does it cost to run?

Baseboard homes see the biggest drop, because electric resistance is the most expensive heat in the city. Radiator homes on gas see smaller heating savings but gain central-quality cooling for the first time. Exact numbers depend on your Toronto Hydro rate plan, TOU or ULO, and how the house is insulated.

The Problem

## What goes wrong with ductless in Toronto

**1\. Rooms with no ducts** Additions, century homes and basements are hard to heat and cool with the existing system.

**2\. One thermostat for the whole house** Upstairs overheats while the basement stays cold, and everyone fights over the setpoint.

**3\. Heat pump heads that look wrong** Bad placement leaves drafts, noise near bedrooms and ugly line-set runs.

Transparent Pricing

## How much does ductless cost in Toronto?

Installed ranges for the GTA, multi-zone installed. Every quote includes the written Manual J, ESA permit, electrical disconnect, commissioning and rebate paperwork. Exact numbers after the load calc.

Single-zone

Multi-zone (2-3 heads)

$8,000-$15,000

**Ontario rebate notice:** Enbridge HER+ up to $7,100 plus HRSP $5,000-$10,000 can offset 40-60% of the invoice on eligible homes. Always "up to", never guaranteed.

Ontario Rebate Stack

## How much can rebates take off the invoice?

Two programs stack on eligible homes. We book the audits, fill both applications and submit them on your behalf. 40-60% of install cost is commonly offset.

Program 1

### Enbridge HER+

up to $7,100

Cold-climate heat pump replacing gas heat. Pre-retrofit audit first.

Program 2

### Home Renovation Savings Program

$5,000-$10,000

By efficiency tier and household income. Listed equipment only.

Combined

### Stacked total

up to $14,100

Pre-retrofit audit $400-$600, refunded upon install. Post-audit after commissioning.

1. **1\. Pre-audit** booked before install day. Skip it and the file is usually dead.
2. **2\. Install** a NEEP / NRCan listed cold-climate model, sized by Manual J.
3. **3\. Post-audit + file.** We submit HER+ and HRSP for you and track the cheque.

Rebates are "up to" amounts, depend on program terms, audits, equipment listing and household eligibility, and are never guaranteed.

Written Manual J

## Why do we run a Manual J before any quote?

Because tonnage decides everything else. Comfort at -25C, hydro bill, compressor life, rebate eligibility. A written Manual J heat loss calc per HRAI standard comes first, then Manual S equipment selection, then the price. Free, and yours to keep.

Manual J Manual S Manual D when needed HRAI standard

- Room-by-room heat loss Walls, windows, attic, air leakage and Toronto design temperature. HRAI method, not square-foot guessing.
- Right tonnage, no strips Sized right, the heat pump carries February on its own. Oversized units short-cycle. Undersized ones lean on strip heat.
- Model numbers on the quote Outdoor unit, indoor unit or air handler, line set, disconnect, panel work. All listed.

How much does a ductless heat pump cost in Toronto?

Single-zone $4,500-$7,000 installed. Multi-zone with 2-3 heads $8,000-$15,000. A larger 4-5 head whole-home system sits above that range depending on the outdoor unit size and line routing.

Can ductless heat my whole house?

Yes, with a cold-climate multi-zone system sized room by room. Most Toronto radiator and baseboard homes need 3-5 heads. Open layouts need fewer.

Will you damage my plaster walls?

No. We route line sets through closets, chases and exterior line hide covers. Only a small penetration behind each head. Century-home plaster and trim stay intact.

Should I keep my boiler?

Your call. Keeping it as backup costs nothing extra and covers you in a deep cold snap. Retiring it removes a gas appliance and can change your rebate picture. We price both.

What is the difference between ductless and mini-split?

Same technology. On our site, ductless means whole-home multi-zone for homes without ducts. Mini-split means one zone for one room or suite.

How loud are the indoor heads?

Quiet. Cold-climate wall heads run around library-level noise on low fan. The outdoor unit is placed with Toronto's noise bylaw and your neighbour's windows in mind.

Do ductless heat pumps qualify for rebates?

Listed cold-climate ductless systems can qualify for Enbridge HER+ when replacing gas and for HRSP on eligible homes. The pre-retrofit audit must happen first. Electric baseboard homes have different rules, which we check upfront.

How long does a multi-zone install take?

Most 3-head jobs are one day on site. Quote to running is about 5 business days including permits and sourcing.
