Cold-climate

heat pumps in Toronto

are built for the bad February week, the one that sits at -20C to -30C for days. That is where ordinary heat pumps fall apart. Big-box mild-climate units lose 40-60% of their capacity below -15C and fall back on 10-20 kW of electric strip heat at 1:1. Hydro bill triples. Rooms stay cold. We install Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat MSZ-FH, Daikin Fit DX17VSS and Fujitsu AOU-U36 exclusively, and size them with a written Manual J so you need zero backup heat.

## What is different about a cold-climate heat pump?

Three things, and the box sticker does not tell you any of them.

1. **Inverter compressor with extended low-ambient range.** It speeds up as the air gets colder instead of shutting off at -12C. Some models add enhanced vapour injection to keep output up.
2. **Published capacity at -15C.** The models we install hold 100% of rated heating capacity at -15C and keep running to -30C. Check the extended tables, not the +8C brochure number.
3. **Winter hardware.** Base pan heater, defrost logic built for humid cold, and refrigerant circuits that run on R32 or R454B on newer lines.

NEEP’s cold-climate air-source heat pump list (ccASHP) and NRCan listings are the quickest filter. EnergyStar Most Efficient models usually sit at the top. If a unit is not on those lists, we do not quote it for whole-home heat.

## Which cold-climate models do we install?

| Model | Where it shines | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat MSZ-FH | Ductless, multi-zone, Hyper-Heat central | Strong low-ambient output, very quiet heads |
| Daikin Fit DX17VSS | Central ducted on narrow lots | Side discharge, full-electric or dual-fuel |
| Fujitsu AOU-U36 | Multi-head ductless | Our go-to for 3-5 head whole-home systems |

Brand matters less than people think. Model selection and sizing decide whether it works. More on each line on our

Daikin

 pages.

## How do we size for -25C, not the average day?

Manual J calculates heat loss at Toronto’s design temperature. Then we check what the outdoor unit actually delivers at -15C and -25C from the manufacturer’s extended capacity data. If the house needs 34,000 BTU/h at design and the unit makes 36,000 at -15C, we’re in good shape. If it makes 24,000, the strips run all January.

Oversizing is the other trap. A 5-ton on a 3-ton house short-cycles in shoulder season and never dries the air in summer. The Forest Hill case study on this page needed 4 tons and two added upstairs returns. It held setpoint through a -24C week with no backup.

## Why do standard heat pumps fail here?

- **Compressor cutout.** Scroll compressors on mild-climate units stop at -12C to -15C ambient.
- **Defrost overload.** Toronto’s humid winter triggers defrost every 30-45 minutes, versus 2-4 times a day in dry or mild climates. Poor placement turns that into an ice block.
- **Refrigerant pressure drop.** R410A loses pressure below -15C. R32 and R454B hold to about -25C.

Fix all three and the heat pump does the whole job. That is the entire point of the cold-climate category.

## Where should the outdoor unit go?

Above the snow. We use raised stands or wall brackets so drift never reaches the coil, with the base pan heater wired and a clear path for defrost water to drain away instead of refreezing under the unit. Keep it out from under roof drip lines, and turn the intake away from the prevailing wind, which matters a lot in lakeside Etobicoke and near the Scarborough Bluffs. On tight lots we check clearances and Toronto’s noise bylaw before choosing the spot.

## Cold-climate full-electric or dual-fuel?

Both work in Toronto. Full-electric retires the furnace, can qualify for the larger Enbridge HER+ fuel-switch rebate of up to $7,100, and drops the gas bill to zero if you go all the way. A

dual-fuel hybrid

[/hybrid-heat-pump-toronto/ →](/hybrid-heat-pump-toronto/)

keeps your furnace and switches to gas at the economic balance point, often near -18C. We price both paths side by side. For the full rebate breakdown see

## What does it cost?

A cold-climate 4-ton central system is $14,000-$22,000 installed before rebates. Ductless multi-zone runs $8,000-$15,000. The written quote lists every part. Our full

The Problem

## What goes wrong with cold-climate in Toronto

**1\. Capacity drops in the cold** Standard units lose 40-60% of heating output below -15C, so backup resistance heat runs and hydro bills jump.

**2\. Defrost cycles that steal heat** Toronto's damp winter air frosts the coil often. Poor controls spend too long defrosting.

**3\. Unclear cold ratings** Brochure numbers hide how a unit performs at -20C. Without NEEP-listed data you are guessing.

Ontario Rebate Stack

## How much can rebates take off the invoice?

Two programs stack on eligible homes. We book the audits, fill both applications and submit them on your behalf. 40-60% of install cost is commonly offset.

Program 1

### Enbridge HER+

up to $7,100

Cold-climate heat pump replacing gas heat. Pre-retrofit audit first.

Program 2

### Home Renovation Savings Program

$5,000-$10,000

By efficiency tier and household income. Listed equipment only.

Combined

### Stacked total

up to $14,100

Pre-retrofit audit $400-$600, refunded upon install. Post-audit after commissioning.

1. **1\. Pre-audit** booked before install day. Skip it and the file is usually dead.
2. **2\. Install** a NEEP / NRCan listed cold-climate model, sized by Manual J.
3. **3\. Post-audit + file.** We submit HER+ and HRSP for you and track the cheque.

Rebates are "up to" amounts, depend on program terms, audits, equipment listing and household eligibility, and are never guaranteed.

Written Manual J

## Why do we run a Manual J before any quote?

Because tonnage decides everything else. Comfort at -25C, hydro bill, compressor life, rebate eligibility. A written Manual J heat loss calc per HRAI standard comes first, then Manual S equipment selection, then the price. Free, and yours to keep.

Manual J Manual S Manual D when needed HRAI standard

- Room-by-room heat loss Walls, windows, attic, air leakage and Toronto design temperature. HRAI method, not square-foot guessing.
- Right tonnage, no strips Sized right, the heat pump carries February on its own. Oversized units short-cycle. Undersized ones lean on strip heat.
- Model numbers on the quote Outdoor unit, indoor unit or air handler, line set, disconnect, panel work. All listed.

Ask in writing

[/contact/ →](/contact/)

Does a heat pump actually work in a Toronto winter at -25C?

Yes, if it is a cold-climate rated model. Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat MSZ-FH, Daikin Fit DX17VSS and Fujitsu AOU-U36 hold 100% heating capacity at -15C and keep running at -30C. Standard mild-climate units cut out near -12C to -15C and lean on strip heat.

What makes a heat pump cold-climate rated?

A variable-speed inverter compressor that ramps up as the air gets colder, enhanced vapour injection on some models, a base pan heater, and published capacity at -15C. NEEP's ccASHP list and NRCan listings are the quickest way to check a model.

Will I need backup heat?

Sized by Manual J, most Toronto homes need zero backup in a normal winter. We still wire a small strip kit or keep the furnace on some jobs as insurance for a once-in-a-decade week. It should almost never run.

How much does a cold-climate heat pump cost?

A cold-climate 4-ton central system runs $14,000-$22,000 installed before rebates. Smaller homes often land at 3 tons for less. Enbridge HER+ up to $7,100 plus HRSP $5,000-$10,000 commonly offsets 40-60% on eligible homes.

Why does my heat pump go into defrost so often?

Toronto winters are humid, so frost builds on the outdoor coil fast. Defrost every 30-45 minutes is normal in damp cold. Proper placement, a working base pan heater and a clear drain stop it from turning into ice buildup.

Is R32 or R454B better than R410A in the cold?

Both hold pressure better than R410A at low temperatures, to around -25C, and both are the refrigerants going forward under the R410A phase-down. The compressor and the model matter more than the gas alone.

Which is better for Toronto, Mitsubishi, Daikin or Fujitsu?

All three work. Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat is strong on ductless and multi-zone. The Daikin Fit's side discharge suits narrow lots. Fujitsu AOU-U36 is our usual multi-head pick. We choose by your lot, ducts and load.

Can a cold-climate heat pump replace my furnace completely?

Yes. Full-electric is common now and can qualify for the larger fuel-switch rebate. If you want gas as a safety net, a dual-fuel hybrid keeps the furnace for the coldest hours.
