AC to heat pump replacement in Toronto. Your central air is done, so put the money into a

Toronto heat pump

[/ →](/)

instead. Same ducts, same coil location, same summer cooling. Then it heats the house all winter and takes most of the load off the furnace, or replaces it outright. Rebates are the trigger. A like-for-like AC gets nothing. A listed heat pump with the pre-audit can qualify for Enbridge HER+ and HRSP. Five business days from accepted quote.

## Why replace a dead AC with a heat pump?

Because it’s the same machine with a reversing valve. A heat pump cools exactly like central AC in July. In winter it runs backwards and heats. You pay a bit more upfront than for a new AC and get:

- **Year-round use** instead of four months
- **Lower gas bills** because the furnace only runs in the coldest hours
- **Rebate eligibility** a new AC never has
- **Better summer comfort** from an inverter compressor that runs long and slow, pulling more humidity out

## What changes in the house?

Almost nothing you’ll see.

| Part | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| Outdoor unit | Old AC condenser out, heat pump in, same pad or a raised bracket |
| Indoor coil | New cased coil (A-coil) on top of the furnace, same spot |
| Ducts | Reused. Static pressure checked |
| Thermostat | Replaced with a dual-fuel thermostat |
| Furnace | Stays, runs only below the switchover |

## How do we size it?

Here’s the trap. AC tonnage was sized for cooling, and Toronto’s heating load is bigger than its cooling load. So we run a Manual J for heating at design temperature and check cooling against it. Sometimes the heat pump comes in a half ton bigger than the old AC. Sometimes the same. Inverter equipment like the Daikin Fit DX17VSS or Carrier Infinity 24VNA6 covers a wide range without short-cycling in summer.

## Do you keep the furnace?

Most AC-to-heat-pump jobs keep it, which makes the system a

dual-fuel hybrid

[/hybrid-heat-pump-toronto/ →](/hybrid-heat-pump-toronto/)

. The dual-fuel thermostat runs the heat pump first and hands off to gas near -18C or wherever the economic balance point lands on your rates. When the furnace eventually dies, swap it for an air handler and you’re full-electric with no change outside.

Already thinking full-electric? That’s a

furnace to heat pump conversion

[/furnace-to-heat-pump-conversion-toronto/ →](/furnace-to-heat-pump-conversion-toronto/)

, and it can qualify for a larger fuel-switch rebate.

## How do the rebates work here?

The pre-retrofit audit has to happen before install. In a July heat wave that’s the step people skip, and it costs them thousands. We book the audit first, often within days, then install. After commissioning, the post-audit, then we file HER+ and HRSP for you. Amounts are up to and depend on program terms. Details on

## Case in point: Leslieville

2003 central AC died in a July heat wave. The owners booked the pre-audit, then swapped to a Daikin Fit 2.5-ton on the existing furnace with a new cased coil and dual-fuel thermostat. Cooling was back in five business days. The furnace now runs only below the switchover. $11,300 installed.

The Problem

## What goes wrong with ac to heat pump in Toronto

**1\. Dead central AC** A failed condenser in July is a good time to replace it with something that also heats.

**2\. New AC isn't rebate-eligible** A like-for-like AC replacement leaves rebate money on the table.

**3\. Old furnace waiting to fail** Replacing only the AC leaves a second big cost coming within a few years.

Ontario Rebate Stack

## How much can rebates take off the invoice?

Two programs stack on eligible homes. We book the audits, fill both applications and submit them on your behalf. 40-60% of install cost is commonly offset.

Program 1

### Enbridge HER+

up to $7,100

Cold-climate heat pump replacing gas heat. Pre-retrofit audit first.

Program 2

### Home Renovation Savings Program

$5,000-$10,000

By efficiency tier and household income. Listed equipment only.

Combined

### Stacked total

up to $14,100

Pre-retrofit audit $400-$600, refunded upon install. Post-audit after commissioning.

1. **1\. Pre-audit** booked before install day. Skip it and the file is usually dead.
2. **2\. Install** a NEEP / NRCan listed cold-climate model, sized by Manual J.
3. **3\. Post-audit + file.** We submit HER+ and HRSP for you and track the cheque.

Rebates are "up to" amounts, depend on program terms, audits, equipment listing and household eligibility, and are never guaranteed.

Written Manual J

## Why do we run a Manual J before any quote?

Because tonnage decides everything else. Comfort at -25C, hydro bill, compressor life, rebate eligibility. A written Manual J heat loss calc per HRAI standard comes first, then Manual S equipment selection, then the price. Free, and yours to keep.

Manual J Manual S Manual D when needed HRAI standard

- Room-by-room heat loss Walls, windows, attic, air leakage and Toronto design temperature. HRAI method, not square-foot guessing.
- Right tonnage, no strips Sized right, the heat pump carries February on its own. Oversized units short-cycle. Undersized ones lean on strip heat.
- Model numbers on the quote Outdoor unit, indoor unit or air handler, line set, disconnect, panel work. All listed.

Pre-audit booked before install. A like-for-like AC gets nothing.

04

### Works with your furnace

Pairs with the existing furnace as dual-fuel, or replaces it when you're ready.

How much does it cost to replace my AC with a heat pump in Toronto?

A central ducted 3-ton heat pump runs $10,000-$16,000 installed before rebates. Smaller semis often land at 2.5 tons. You get cooling plus winter heating for not much more than a new AC.

Is a heat pump as good as central AC in summer?

Yes. A heat pump is an air conditioner that can also run in reverse. Inverter models run longer at lower speed, so they dehumidify better than a single-stage AC.

Do I have to replace my furnace too?

No. The heat pump can pair with your existing furnace as dual-fuel. The furnace only runs below the switchover temperature. When it dies, you can go full-electric.

Why not just buy a new AC?

A like-for-like AC qualifies for no rebates and only works four months a year. A listed heat pump with the pre-audit can qualify for Enbridge HER+ and HRSP and cuts your gas use all winter.

Can I use my existing ducts?

Yes. The new coil goes in the same spot as the old AC coil. We check static pressure in case the returns are undersized for heating airflow.

How fast can you get cooling back?

5 business days from accepted quote. In a heat wave we prioritize, and we can usually get the pre-audit booked quickly.

What is a dual-fuel thermostat?

A thermostat that runs the heat pump first and hands off to the furnace below a set outdoor temperature, often around -18C, based on your gas and hydro rates.

Is my old AC refrigerant a problem?

Old R22 and R410A systems are being phased down, which raises repair costs. We recover the old refrigerant properly when the unit comes out.
